Mental Health Awareness Month, recognized in May since 1949, is for raising awareness about mental illness, depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and more. It also aims to draw awareness about suicide, which can be a result of mental illness. And it strives to reduce the stigma and misconceptions surrounding mental illness.

Officials and businesses in York County, Pennsylvania, recognize the importance of supporting mental health awareness. Together, they are fostering a culture of support for mental wellness among their employees and the broader community.

A great example is the Shine a Light on Mental Health Awareness initiative, where York County buildings are bathed in green light. Green is the national color of mental health acceptance, representing hope, strength, support and encouragement for people who live with mental illness. And, like last year, Met-Ed employees participated by showing their encouragement and commitment to mental health awareness. “We want to take care of our employees, and mental health is a big part of it,” said Scott R. Wyman, president of FirstEnergy’s Pennsylvania Operations, which includes Met-Ed. “We need our employees to be mentally available to do their jobs safely, so we want them to get whatever assistance they may need.”

Through FirstEnergy’s Life Resources EAP Program, employees are offered numerous services to achieve and maintain good mental health and resolve life challenges. This includes free confidential counseling for emotional problems, stress, anxiety, depression, marital difficulties, family conflicts, drug and alcohol addiction, and financial and legal issues.
