Ray Evans, vice president of Environmental and Technologies, has announced plans to retire, effective April 1, 2018. Ray began his career in 1978 at the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company (CEI) and held a variety of engineering, environmental, commodity risk and management positions with CEI and FirstEnergy. He became director of the Environmental Department in 2009, executive director, Environmental in 2011, and was named to his current position in 2012.

“Under Ray’s leadership, our company has maintained a very strong environmental record, reducing emissions and minimizing reportable events consistently over the years,” said Senior Vice President and President, FirstEnergy Utilities Steve Strah. “He sponsored the Compliance Assistance Program and Environmental Threat Assessment efforts that have helped identify issues and recognize best practices in our power plants and across the organization. We wish Ray and his family all the best in retirement.”

Ray is a registered professional engineer in Ohio and earned his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Dayton. He also is a graduate of Clemson University’s master of environmental systems engineering program.

He is a member of the environmental committees of several key industry groups, including the Electric Power Research Institute, the Edison Electric Institute, the Utility Air Regulatory Group and the Ohio Electric Utility Institute. He serves on the board for the Ohio Trust for Public Land and served on the board of the Electric Power Generation Association. Locally, he has participated in the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency’s air-quality planning efforts.
