Proud to be a Citizen – and Community Volunteer
July 22, 2022
In the early 20th century, many people from around the world flocked to America’s shores in search of a better life and freedom that couldn’t be found in their home countries. While that search continues today, it was love that brought Guillermo Rodriguez, Supply Chain category specialist IV, to America.
Guillermo was born and raised in El Salvador, Central America. While participating in a Christian organization called Adventures in Missions in 2013, he met Emily. And the two of them traveled the world doing missionary work with other members.
“Emily is an American citizen and we got married in October 2017 in El Salvador – and from that day we began our immigration journey,” he said. “It’s a lengthy process, but so well worth it.”
After the nearly five-year process, Guillermo passed the final naturalization test and in April he received notification stating he was eligible to become a U.S. citizen.
“I attended the Citizenship Ceremony in June, where I took the Oath of Allegiance and received my Certificate of Naturalization,” he said. “I now can proudly say that I’m officially a U.S. citizen. It was a day I will remember for the rest of my life.”

Guillermo, who has been with FirstEnergy for six months, also is an avid volunteer in the community.
“I’m a mentor and volunteer for a program called Rec Night at Citizens Akron Church. This program also partners with the Akron Kohl Family YMCA. The purpose of Rec Night is to prevent violence after school hours, by providing a safe space where at-risk-youth can play basketball and build healthy relationships with other kids their age. At the same time, they are learning Christian and good moral values from mentors and volunteers in the program.”
Guillermo also has plans to volunteer with Global Cleveland, a nonprofit organization that attracts, welcomes and connects international newcomers to economic, social and educational opportunities in Cleveland and Cuyahoga County.
“I’m looking forward to volunteering with Global Cleveland where I can assist others who are new citizens to the U.S. and our local community,” he said.
Becoming a U.S. citizen is very meaningful to Guillermo – and he’s immensely proud.
“Being an American citizen is a great privilege. I now share the bond of having the same nationality of my wife and children, and the rights and responsibilities as an American,” he said. “But most importantly I can live freely. I have the opportunity to be successful and to provide a good life for my family.”
