FirstEnergy Engineers Promote Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

February 21, 2023

This week, we are joining the National Society of Professional Engineers in celebrating National Engineers Week. It’s also Black History Month, a special opportunity to recognize the unique achievements of our Black/African American employees, friends and neighbors.

We often don’t consider the importance of conveniences like the three-light traffic signal, refrigerated trucks or automatic elevator doors. Nor do we realize that Black/African American engineers are the ones who made these technologies possible: Garrett MorganFrederick McKinley Jones and Alexander Miles* respectively.

We’re proud to recognize the Black/African American engineers responsible for inventions that are central to our daily lives, as well as highlight FirstEnergy’s own engineers who work every day to help keep power flowing to homes and businesses. Our engineers are dedicated to inspiring the next generation of Black/African American professionals to pursue careers in STEM fields, helping to ensure we garner unique perspectives that drive innovation as we work to build a smarter electric grid that powers a brighter future for our communities.

Watch the video below to see how a few of FirstEnergy’s Black/African American engineers are sharing their thoughts on the importance of Diversity Equity & Inclusion (DEI) in the engineering field.
