A Cheerful Giver

People volunteer for many reasons – some to give back to the community they live in, and others volunteer to help those in need. LaJeana Dickson Gilliam, customer account specialist II, volunteers because it feels good.

“Volunteering has always been a passion for me. There’s nothing better than knowing you’re helping those in need, but also improving your community,” said LaJeana. “I also love getting my coworkers, family and friends together for volunteer projects.”

As a  member in a number of FirstEnergy Employee Business Resource Groups (EBRG) –  Alternate Current, Helping Women Grow, MOSaic, THRIVE, Veterans and Allies, and Women in Leadership – LaJeana embodies our Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) and Stewardship core values.

“LaJeana’s passion for DEI and her ability to communicate and motivate others in support of it  is impressive. She truly understands the importance of all facets of DEI so that the concepts are relatable to everyone,” said Andy Lubich, director, Operations, Ohio Edison. “When talking about DEI, she elevates the conversation beyond ‘what we all look like.’ She understands it’s about diverse thought, diverse opportunities and more – and she encourages everyone to share advancing our efforts to promote it.”

LaJeana adds: “I appreciate diversity, believe in equity and feel we need inclusion for all,” she said.

Community Support

LaJeana volunteers with Learning About Me-Mentorship program for young females ages 5 to 20 years old, and with The Litterbugs, a group who picks up and disposes of litter throughout the community, and many other nonprofit organizations.

“I encourage everyone to volunteer for a cause near and dear to your heart. It will make a positive different and will make you feel great!” she said.

LaJeana has been with company since 2013 when she was hired as a contractor. In her current role, she manages commercial customer accounts.

(L.) LaJeana represented FirstEnergy at the 2022 Fathers Walk at Louisa May Alcott Elementary School in Cleveland. During the Fathers Walk, fathers and male mentors walk or drive the children they care for to school. The event is the result of research that shows father and male involvement is essential to promoting good classroom behavior, better grades and higher educational attainment levels and enjoyment of school and learning.
