A Marathon of Fun

October 12, 2022

More than 7,000 people, including nearly 100 FirstEnergy employees, competed in the 20th FirstEnergy Akron Marathon, Half Marathon and Team Relay last month. The event kicked off in downtown Akron on the All-America Bridge and the route continued through various city neighborhoods.

Our company and employees had a huge presence in this year’s marathon. FirstEnergy was a presenting sponsor, and Jason Lisowski, vice president, controller and chief accounting officer, kicked off the event with remarks at the starting line.

“FirstEnergy is proud to serve as a presenting sponsor for this world-class event, which brings significant benefits and positive energy to our community every year,” Jason told the crowd. “Of course, none of this would be possible without Akron Marathon founders Steve and Jeannine Marks. In the true spirit of Akron, thank you for showing us all what is possible when vision and passion are paired with good people who are willing to do the work.”

Among the cyclists escorting runners at the start of the race were: Doug Colafella, director, Communications and Branding; Tricia Ingraham, consultant, External Communications; Amy Hopkins, consultant, Regional External Affairs, and her husband, Michael; and retiree Steve Briggs. FirstEnergy Young Professionals (FEYPs) volunteered by operating a watering station and our FirstEnergy Ambassadors to The University of Akron hosted a Zip Zone to network with students and cheer on the runners. Louie the Lightning Bug (also known as Bryan Jankura, Transmissions Operations specialist II) was on hand throughout the event.

Our Ohio Edison utility trucks flanked the entrance to the All-American Bridge. This volunteer effort was led by Ryan Miller, supervisor, Regional Operations, Line & Substations West; Chad Yaros, line leader-U1; and Tom Geiger, lineman A. Also, our Stop. Look. Live. trailer was located at the finish line.
