A Special Tribute
December 1, 2022
Throughout the year, there are many programs and initiatives to show veterans they are appreciated and supported. However, the month of November brings a special awareness with the recognition of Veterans Day – originally known as “Armistice Day” in celebration of Nov. 11, 1919, as the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Fighting ceased when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect in the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
Here are a few examples of our employees supporting Veterans Day.
Potomac Edison employees participated in Operation Green Light; an event created by the Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs to illuminate Maryland’s landmarks in green. The event, which ran Nov. 7-13, is an initiative to let veterans know they are seen, appreciated and supported.
“We were so excited to join other organizations and businesses in Operation Green Light. Our employees wholeheartedly participated in making sure our Oakland and Frederick service centers were bathed in green lights all week. With the support of our Administrative Services teams the lights were shining green to show our appreciation for the sacrifices veterans have made on behalf of all of us and our country,” said Linda Moss, president, Maryland Operations. “It’s so important that we continue to support initiatives that raise awareness for veterans. And we also want to encourage employees to become allies of veterans by joining one of our Veterans & Allies Employee Business Resource Groups.”

During Veterans Day week, our Veterans & Allies East Employee Business Resource Group received a request from Keystone Military Families in Shoemakersville, Pa., asking volunteers to unpack more than 8,000 pounds of food. We answered the call with more than 20 employees who volunteered – sorting and unpacking the food in record time. And since there was extra time left, our group also repaired a stairway and completed a shopping request from Keystone’s director. Keystone provides a variety of support programs and services for military families. The organization currently assists more than 150 families every week with groceries, clothing, household items and furniture.
