Gary Bacorn, a Potomac Edison troubleworker based out of the Augusta (W.Va.) Service Center, passed away unexpectedly in 2021. Unbeknownst to his coworkers, Gary had a holiday tradition of donating more than 20 bicycles each year to the kids of needy families through the local Giving Tree Program. After hearing about his generosity, Gary’s coworkers decided to continue his tradition of giving in his honor.
“Our Employee Engagement Team wanted to participate in the Giving Tree Program for the holidays, and we thought what better way to honor Gary’s memory than to fulfill the wishes of some local kids,” said Debbie Champ, Operations Manager, Augusta Service Center. “Our employees purchased three mountain bikes, as requested through the program, and left them with the parents so when the kids woke up Christmas morning, they thought the bikes were from Santa.”
The Giving Tree Program allows organizations – and individuals – to adopt local families who need assistance and provide gifts to children who might not otherwise receive them. The families selected for the program are identified by the guidance departments of area school districts.
“I’m so proud and appreciative of the troubleworkers in the Augusta Lines Department for keeping Gary’s memory alive by continuing to donate bikes through the Giving Tree Program,” said Don McGettigan, Director, Operations. “Because of their efforts – and the generosity of other Potomac Edison employees who donate gifts – we are able to brighten the holidays for some very deserving local families.”
