Announcing FirstEnergy’s New Head of External Affairs

July 5, 2022

We are pleased to welcome Joseph (Joe) McClelland to FirstEnergy as vice president, External Affairs, effective July 18. Joe will be replacing Mike Eckard, who will be retiring from FirstEnergy. We greatly appreciate Mike’s service to FirstEnergy and wish him the best in his retirement.

Joe will oversee all government relations activities for the company, including local, state and federal affairs. As part of his role, he will oversee FirstEnergy’s engagement with policymakers on legislation that may directly impact our customers and operations and ensure that related activities and stakeholder relationships are in keeping with our core values and enhanced policies and procedures. He will report to Sam Belcher, senior vice president, Operations.

Joe brings nearly 40 years of experience in the energy and electric utility industry to FirstEnergy. He has served at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for nearly 20 years in key leadership roles, including most recently as the director of the Office of Energy Infrastructure Security as well as the director of the Office of Electric Reliability.

Joe began his career at Allegheny Energy and spent more than two decades at the company in a variety of positions. His expertise in a range of areas that are key to our business will be an excellent addition to our leadership team, and we look forward to welcoming him to FirstEnergy.
