Is Your Family Ready?
September 2, 2022
From severe heat and wildfires in the west, to heavy rains and dangerous flooding in the east, it seems there is never a shortage of major storms and other emergency events in our country. With so many natural disasters to contend with, it’s never been more important for you and your family to be prepared.
National Preparedness Month is an observance each September to raise awareness about the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies that could happen at any time.
“Severe weather can strike quickly and create significant disruptions,” said Glen Moore, consultant, Emergency Preparedness. “As hurricane season heats up in the Atlantic, now is a good time to assess whether you are ready for a major storm or other emergency event that hits close to home.”
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recommends the following steps to help keep you and your family safe when disaster strikes:
- Make a Plan – Prepare in advance for what to do in various emergency situations. Have an evacuation plan and designate a safe place for family members to meet.
- Build a Kit – Disaster supplies should include basic items (e.g., water, non-perishable food, first-aid kit, flashlight and extra batteries) that a household might need during emergencies.
- Get Involved – Find opportunities to support community preparedness.
