Pitching in to Help
August 12, 2023
Two employees who pitched in to help those in need were recently honored at Cleveland Guardians games by throwing out the first pitch.
Thane Wolford and Steve McLaughlin both performed heroic acts that saved lives.
Thane, regional distribution systems operator, was reading a meter located near the fenced backyard of an Akron home. Two teenagers were hanging out around a pool. One of the teenagers jumped in, thinking he could swim. He was bobbing up and down in nine feet of water. While an elderly woman called 911, Thane jumped into the pool and saved the boy from drowning. Rather than just reading the meter and continuing along his route, Thane quickly reacted and saved the teenager.
“I’m glad I was in the right place at the right time to help save the young man,” Thane said.
Steve, Ohio Edison line serviceman, saved the life of an airplane pilot and son who crashed in the front yard of his home. He used fire extinguishers from his truck to hold back the flames and pulled the pilot and his son from the wreckage before the plane was completely consumed by fire.
Steve’s actions were unmistakably heroic. Without question, the pilot and his son would have perished if Steve had not acted as a first responder and putting his own life at risk. He unbuckled the son who was burned but conscious and helped him out of the plane. Then he helped the unconscious and injured pilot by pulling him out of the wreckage. As others were coming to aid, Steve continued to suppress the fire with his extinguisher and took command by instructing others to call 911 and the fire department.
“I don’t consider myself a hero because I was helping a neighbor in need. I was grateful for FirstEnergy safety training that guided me in this scenario,” Steve said.
We’re very proud of Thane and Steve whose selfless actions demonstrated their commitment to living FirstEnergy’s core values.
