Powering Literacy

March 9, 2023

To enhance literacy skills for at-risk students, FirstEnergy is leveraging our sponsorship with the Cleveland Cavaliers to support mobile book fairs in Cleveland and Akron area schools. This is the second year we’ve sponsored the program to strengthen and support the communities we serve.

Recently, 225 students in Akron’s Pfieffer Elementary each chose two new books to take home as part of the program. Pfieffer Principal, Pharon Hranko, was grateful for the contribution and said all Akron Public Schools are working to improve literacy rates. “Any book in the hands of students makes a huge difference,” Ms. Hranko said.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, students who have access to various reading materials in their homes – including books, newspapers and magazines – are more likely to earn higher reading proficiency scores compared to their peers with limited reading materials.

Other schools benefitting from the program include Bolton and Mayfair Elementary Schools in Cleveland and the Helen Arnold Community Learning Center in Akron.
